CPSC, Schneider Electric North American Division Announce Recall of
AFCIs

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announces
the following recall in voluntary cooperation with the firms below.
Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless
otherwise instructed.

Name of product: Arc Fault Circuit Interrupters (AFCI)

Units: About 700,000

Manufacturer: Schneider Electric North American Division, of Palatine,
Ill.

Hazard: An AFCI is an electrical circuit protection device (circuit
breaker) that detects electrical arcs from cracked, broken or damaged
electrical insulation and shuts off power to the circuit before the
arcing leads to a fire. An electronic component failure inside the AFCIs
can cause the devices to not detect an electrical arc. Although the
AFCIs will function as regular circuit breakers, they may not detect an
arc fault, posing a safety risk to consumers.

Incidents/Injuries: Schneider Electric is investigating one reported
fire during a new home construction that may be related to this problem.
No injuries have been reported.

Description: The recalled Square D QO(r) and Homeline(r) Arc Fault
Interrupter circuit breakers are used with 15- and 20-amp branch
circuits. They are required to be installed in bedroom circuits in
accordance with the 2002 National Electrical Code. The recalled units
were manufactured after March 1, 2004, and have a blue test button. The
AFCI circuit breakers have one of the following date codes - CN, DN, EN,
FN, GN, HN, or JN - stamped in red on the breaker label located just
above the wiring terminal. The recalled units also have one of the
following catalog numbers printed on a label on the front of the
breaker: QO115AFI, QO115AFIC, QO120AFI, QO120AFIC, QOB115AFI, QOB120AFI,
HOM115AFI, HOM115AFIC, HOM120AFI, HOM120AFIC, QO115VHAFI, QO120VHAFI,
QOB115VHAFI, or QOB120VHAFI.

Sold at: Electrical distributors and retailers sold the AFCIs between
March 2004 and September 2004 for between $30 and $130.

Manufactured in: Mexico

Remedy: Installed AFCIs will be replaced free of charge through
electrical contractors. Consumers can return uninstalled AFCIs to the
retailers or distributor from whom the unit was purchased for a free
replacement unit.

IMPORTANT SAFETY RECALL INformATION
Ongoing Recall of Cadet Manufacturing Company In-Wall Electric Heaters in Series FW, RW, FX, LX, TK, ZA, Z, RA, RK, RLX, RX, and ZC


To Purchasers and/or Owners of Cadet In-Wall Electric Heaters:

In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (“CPSC”), Cadet announced a recall of approximately 1.9 million in-wall electric heaters under the brand names Cadet and Encore on February 17, 2000. This ongoing recall includes all models and variants of Cadet and Encore Series listed above, regardless of manufacture or purchase date. According to the CPSC, these heaters may be defective, and could overheat, fail, catch fire, and spew flames and molten particles. If you have these heaters installed at your property or residence and have not yet participated in the recall, Cadet and the CPSC strongly urge you to participate now. Participation deadline is February 17, 2002.

The recall is distinct from Cadet’s 1997 recall program. In the 1997 recall, Cadet offered to provide new over temperature limit control switches for replacement in certain of its heaters. The present recall involves the removal and replacement of the entire heatbox, not including any fittings, fixtures, wall cans, grills or thermostats. You will need to keep your existing wall can and grill. A few exceptions apply: (1) the heatboxes that currently have a built-in thermostat (a small thermostat installed directly on the heatbox) will be replaced by a heatbox with a built-in thermostat; (2) the TK and RK models will require total unit replacements; and (3) replacements for the FW and RW models require an additional adapter plate and grill (See order form).

Under the terms of the recall, Cadet will provide you with replacement heaters at the prices listed below, which are substantially below the normal retail prices for these heaters. If you already removed and replaced the recalled units on or after October 23, 1997, but prior to February 17, 2000 and you provide written verification of your removal and replacement of the heaters with a list of the recalled models you replaced, you may receive a refund of up to $25.00 per replaced unit, subject to the availability of funds in a special remediation fund. Due to our 1999 Chapter 11 Bankruptcy, we are not able to provide you with free replacements or full reimbursements.

The Cadet Series 2000 line contains many important safety features that are only available in this line. It is recommended that all recalled heaters be replaced by Cadet brand heaters under this safety recall program because:

  • No other brand heater is UL approved for Cadet’s wall cans. This means no costly construction for the replacement. The new heatbox fits directly into your existing wall can. (exceptions: the TK and RK models require a total unit replacement, and the FW and RW models require an additional adapter plate and grill)
  • We are offering replacement heaters at an average of two-thirds off their normal retail prices. Replacing the recalled heaters with any other brand or directly through a Cadet retailer or distributor will be more costly. Note: This recall program is offered only by Cadet, not through its retail, wholesale, or distribution channels.
  • All replacements will be from our Cadet Series 2000 product line, which was designed to exceed industry standards and specifically to satisfy the CPSC consent agreement. The Cadet Series 2000 electric heaters are the safest heaters Cadet has ever manufactured. All Cadet Series 2000 heaters have oversized high temperature, manual reset limit switches with a 25 amp rating at 240 volts. This manual reset limit alerts the user of a potential problem (commonly the heater is blocked or needs to be cleaned), and requires the user to manually reset the switch to resume operation. This product line also includes over temperature, back-up thermal protection devices. If severe overload or component failure occurs, this back-up thermal device is designed to completely shut the unit down, requiring service to reactivate the heater or replacement if necessary.
  • This recall is a twenty-four (24) month program ending February 17, 2002. Orders are filled on a first come, first served basis. It typically takes 5-8 weeks to receive your replacement heater. While waiting, we recommend you keep your heater clean (click here for cleaning instructions) , keep everything at least three (3) feet away from the heater and comply with the following CPSC instructions:
  • Inspect the heaters for lint and dust buildup.
  • Keep the heaters clean and free from lint and dust buildup. Remember to turn the power off at the electrical panel board (circuit breaker or fuse box) when cleaning the heaters to avoid risk of electric shock, burns or possible death!
  • Keep furniture, drapes, and other flammable materials away from the heaters.
  • Make sure every floor of the home, especially near bedrooms, has at least one fully operational smoke detector.
  • Have a well-defined and rehearsed escape plan and an alternate escape plan in the event of a fire.

If you have a Z or ZC model heater, we urge you to use an alternate heat source if available. If no alternate heat source is available, use the heater only while you are in the room and able to watch it carefully, keep everything at least three (3) feet away from the heater, and follow the instructions above.

What Is A Dip Tube?
A dip tube is a plastic tube in your water heater that brings the cold water into the bottom of the heater. The dip tube is designed to prevent incoming cold water from mixing with existing hot water.

Some of the dip tubes manufactured by Perfection Corporation and supplied to most major water heater manufacturers between August, 1993 and October, 1996 were made of plastic and are now disintegrating.

Signs Of A Defective Dip Tube
• Loss of hot water pressure
• Low hot water temperatures
• Appearance of tiny white or gray particles in your hot water

Put Your Dip Tube To The Test
Unscrew the aerator at one of your faucets to see if you notice white or gray particles. If you do, put the particles in a capful of vinegar. If the particles dissolve, they are calcium buildups. If they do not dissolve, you have a defective dip tube. PLEASE NOTE: This is only one way to determine if a dip tube is defective. Lack of particles does not mean your dip tube is functioning properly.

CPSC, York International Corp. Announce Recall of Gas Furnaces

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in
cooperation with the manufacturer named below, today announced voluntary
recalls of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using
recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.

Name of product: Gas furnaces

Units: About 226,000

Manufacturer: The Unitary Products Group (UPG) of York International
Corp., of York, Pa.

Hazard: These furnaces can overheat, causing heat-exchanger cracking,
burn-through and, in extreme cases, furnace wrapper burn-through. This
can lead to heating and possible burning of the drywall and other
combustibles adjacent to the furnace, which poses a fire and smoke
hazard to consumers.

Incidents/Injuries: UPG has received 27 reports of fires, some resulting
in extensive property damage that could be related to these hazards.
There have been no injuries reported.

Description: The recall involves Coleman, Coleman Evcon and Red T brand
furnaces. The furnaces are a silver color with white access panels. The
"Coleman," "Coleman Evcon" and "Red T" brand names are located on the
middle of the front access panel. These model furnaces with model
numbers listed below are included in the recall:

Remedy: Consumers should not use the heating function of these furnaces
until it has been inspected and repaired. Consumers should contact UPG
to schedule a free inspection and repair of any furnace involved in the
recall.

Lennox Pulse Heating Furnace Safety Notice

Lennox Industries Inc., the maker of Lennox Pulse furnaces, announced it has set up a free program to inspect Lennox furnaces installed from 1982 to 1989 to check for carbon monoxide leaks.

According to Bob Schjerven, president and chief operating officer for Lennox, dealers have recently reported increased instances of corrosion in some Pulse furnace heat exchangers in units installed before 1990.

As part of the inspection program, Lennox will provide a free AIM Safety carbon monoxide detector.

The company urges owners of Lennox Pulse furnaces installed between 1982 and 1989 to schedule a furnace and safety check with an independent Lennox dealer by calling 800-537-4341.

The Inspection is free, but if the furnace has to be cleaned in order to be inspected, the customer could be charged for the cleaning.

To identify a Pulse furnace, look for its name on the door. If the unit is a Pulse 21 furnace, it was manufactured after 1990 and is not part of the inspection program.

For those with Lennox furnaces without the Pulse 21 name, the next step is to remove the front door and look for the name tag. These tags are usually placed on the inside cabinet wall on the left side of the furnace.

Locate the model number on the tag (either G14 or GSR14 followed by a series of numbers and letters) and the serial number on a tag below the name tag. Homeowners who call the 800 number with the information will be told if their furnace is eligible for this inspection program.

The inspection program runs through July1, 1999. If the warranted heat exchanger needs replacing, Lennox will provide a new heat exchanger at no cost to the owner. Labor costs for replacement parts are not part of the Pulse furnace warranty.
